Big Moon

Otsukimi literally means big moon viewing, and is the celebration of the full moon that falls in either September or October. This moon is very often a harvest moon, especially in the more rural farming regions.
In Japan they say there is a rabbit in the moon, the same way we say there's a man in the moon. Decorations and foods to celebrate Otsukimi have images of rabbits on them, or even more adorable,  are just in the shape of rabbits.
Dango is the most traditional food during moon viewing, as the rabbit on the face of the moon is said to be pounding rice for dango.
This years moon viewing celebrations were interrupted by the ever so rude Typhoon Jelawat, but Ben and I enjoyed the day after the full moon, in the perfect clearness of post typhoon weather.
